Hariata talks about Pancakes - Why are eggs good for us?
On Tuesday this week we made pancakes. We made two batches of pancakes. One with an egg. One without an egg. We talked about why eggs are good for us. Eggs are good for us because they have protein. We recorded our ideas and drew pictures of our body parts that protein is good for - like our hair, brain, nails, puku, heart and bones. Trinity said that the pancakes without the eggs were doughy, most of us thought it just tasted like flour. But we enjoyed it mostly because we liked eating the pancakes with bananas. Bananas are good for us too! They are good because they have vitamins, calcium and potassium which are all good for keeping us healthy.
How to record a retell.
Take a photo. Push the record button. Listen to your message again. If you like it tap the tick button. REMEMBER: TO USE A CLEAR VOICE. TO RECORD MORE THAN ONE IDEA. GIVE IT A GO.
From Darrius - Sharing his learning - READING - I can retell
Darrius - I am learning to talk about the story in my own words. I can USE Blogger Junior to record my idea. I can take a picture of my picture book and record my voice. Sometimes there is a little noise in the background. NEXT TIME: I will try to find a quiet spot in the class or ask people around me to be quiet.
From Whare - learning to use the Blogger Junior app
I can hold the camera up the right way. I can use the tool to record my voice. I can say one simple idea. Next time: I need to think about placing the object up the right way. I can say more, like 3 ideas about the object. Thanks for sharing Whare.
Christopher takes a photo of class work - Vitamins in our foods!
Our class has been learning about fruit and vegetables. We have planted our own potatoes and we hope to harvest them before the end of the term and cook them. In the meantime we are learning about other fruits and vegetables. We are learning about the important things that these foods give us, like vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates and sugars to give us energy. We are learning hand games to help us to remember important words like carbohydrates. We are using thinking tools from SOLO to talk about the cause and effect of not having enough vitamins or minerals in our bodies. We started by talking about what would happen to our bodies if we didn't drink enough water - come into class and look at our results!

Kei te ako a Whare ki te mahi Blogger Junior
Whare is learning how to use the ipad app called Blogger Junior to record his brother Wiremu's learning about water this morning. We are learning about water and why it is good for our bodies. We watched the video together. Whare will need to move closer to Wiremu. Wiremu has to speak louder and clearer. The tamariki in the classroom have to be a little bit more quieter when someone is recording. Darrius had a loud voice today. Darrius please use a class voice next time. Well done Whare
Bella is helping her partner to record a video using the Blogger Jnr
Today Bella's partner recorded a video of her. It was a very short practise video. This video will help us to learn about how to hold an ipad stable and where the record button is. We hope that after several practises we will all know how to take a good video. Thank you Bella for participating in our practise today. Whaea Liz would like to leave this video on the blog to show the progress we will make after 2 weeks or so. In class we are building a success rubric so that we know what to look for and what to do to make a good video.

Lately it has been very cold. We have talked about the change in weather from Autumn to Winter. In class we have talked about what we see outside the classroom when it is winter and how that can make us feel. Over two weeks, we wrote about the wind, the frost and the rain.
Remember to click on the link above and leave us a positive message about our writing. Thank you

Waiata-a-ringa, Poi, Rakau
Kei te mahi waiata-a-ringa, poi, rakau, i te marae. Engari ko te mea nui, Ko te WHAKAWHANAUNGATANGA.
He rawe ta matou haerenga.
We enjoyed action songs, stick games and poi drills. The best thing about out trip to the marae was the CONNECTEDNESS (Close relationships/friendliness/respect/honor) that we gave to each other that evening and day. We had to work together to prepare the food, the bedding and to care for one another as friends (classmates). It was pretty scary for some of us, there were 13 Space 7 children who stayed the night, and only 5 of our parents stayed. So, some of us had to show a lot of Kia Kaha (to be brave) that night to stay a night away from our own families.

This week we are choosing the talent that we will be studying.

Whakawhanaungātanga
Our bilingual classes went for an over-night stay at a local marae in Awahou, Rotorua to celebrate Matāriki and our Māori new year. We asked "why are we going to the marae?" - "...good question" our teacher said. So we wrote on post it notes everything we knew about a marae, and on another post it, what we wanted to know/do at the marae. Most of us wanted to eat, sleep and play at the marae. What do you expect we are five and six years old of course - being at the marae to us is mostly about playing with others. At the marae we did eat, we sang, we slept, we drew kōwhaiwhai, we took photos, we listened to stories about some of the Te Arawa ancestors and about Matāriki. We had loads of fun.
Thank you to all our parent helpers, teachers and tuakana for looking after us - from Space 7.
Writing experiences
Writing is thinking in ink.
In class we like to listen to our teacher read big books to us. We like to make things too. We write stories about things that we do and things that we are learning about. We like to write things that are interesting. We are learning to write and record our ideas. This term we have been learning about where our food comes from. Look for our posts about the work we did on where milk, chocolate, sugar and bread come from.

The Snake Cake by Paula Cartwright, illustrations by Chantelle Stewart.
On Friday we made a snake cake. It was a humongous biscuit cake. First Miss Kururangi read us a big book about a Queen who was celebrating her birthday. She wanted a different cake. Everyone in the village made her cakes....all sorts of cakes. Guess who made her the best cake ever! The children! Take a look at our cake! Thank you to our parent helper Whaea Matariki who came in to help us.
Take a look on our blog for the recipe.
We used the beFunky app to create this awesome frame for our pictures! Kia Ora

Cow Paintings
The koru is the beginning of kōwhaiwhai patterns
We are learning to draw a koru pattern. We see these at Marae and on most Māori carvings and drawings. The koru comes from the fern frond (plant). It was good practising these patterns before our overnight stay at Tarimano marae because we got to sketch the kowhaiwhai patterns we could see in the wharenui.
1st We practised on a whiteboard.
2nd We drew our whānau using koru.
